Typhunctions/Lokales Nest

The project explores the potential of cattail (typha) as a sustainable raw material. It examines how its diverse uses can be harnessed through design. iIn Germany, cattail cultivation currently plays a negligible role; however, the 'Greifswald Mire Centre' is already planting cattail on 10 hectares. Cultivating cattails makes marshlands - which are unsuitable for conventional agriculture - usable while also protecting them.
The 'Local Nest' hammock demonstrates potential applications for the plant. It was made largely by Hand with partly the aid of a weaving machine. 'Local Nest' is made almost entirely of cattails, with the design adapted to the material's properties. The plant components are thus used according to their specific characteristics. The hammock draws on the motif of a birds nest, just as cattails provide shelter for birds. It creates a place of comfort and safety for humans.
