raw becoming

Most wool processing facilities in Germany disappeared due to industrial development and the high costs of wool processing. The project ‘Raw Becoming‘ uses regional German wool that would otherwise be thrown away or burned.

After collecting the shorn fleeces, I adapted the processing steps to simplify working with it. After sorting it to obtain clean wool, it was heated for ‘disinfection‘ and assembled into the shape of a rug. The rug was woven, washed and dried.

The exhibited rug shows felted paths as a result of my continued routines over it, by my constant walking on it. This transformation of the wool made me question the value of permanence in domestic objects.
