How can urban in-between spaces be reevaluated through a holistic praxis of research?

In this project, I investigate how 10 local spaces surrounding weißensee kunsthochschule berlin can be reimagined beyond the negative connotations that terms like “wasteland” support. I refer to these spaces as urban in-betweens—spaces that, rather than being empty or abandoned, serve as dynamic ecosystems and refuges for plants and animals amid the city’s density. The 10 places I mapped in the project constitute only a small part of the network of empty properties in Berlin. However, they are an expression of my subjective approach to the project—they are places I have passed by in my everyday movement through the city. Working with a holistic research approach, the project seeks to represent the historical fragments and ecological processes at play in these places and rethinks their value. The research resulted in the book “Living in between”. It is comprised of two parts: an analysis of urban in-betweens that is both theoretical and personal, and a tactile, material exploration.
