How can local wool be transformed from a waste product into a resource?

This project focuses on regional sheep wool and uses it to develop a material archive. The starting point for this series of experiments is the fact that, due to its rough texture and the lack of applications in Germany, sheep wool usually ends up as a waste product. “Felt & Loom” seeks to change that fact: by combining weaving with robot-based felting technology, the project develops new material qualities. By adjusting individual parameters during weaving and separately fine-tuning the robot settings, the project can precisely produce a variety of material qualities.
The result is a fully recyclable mono-material (from a single raw material source) with a wide range of properties and novel possibilities for further processing. Potential applications include home textiles, fashion, and interior design.
