In this workshop, we will explore the versatility of native marsh plants. Using prepared materials – cattail leaves (Typha latifolia) and drooping rush (Juncus effesus) – we will experiment with traditional techniques for processing natural fibres and the strands made from them. Twisting and braiding plant fibres allows us to feel the strength and structure of the leaves. We use these strands to lay the foundations for twisting and weaving vessels. The use of plant fibres allows, amongst other things, for needle-free looping. We will also explore another method for processing the leaves into more two-dimensional forms using our plant cords. The open structures lend a sense of lightness and transparency; the braiding of vessels and objects is a possibility. The focus is on individual experimentation with traditional techniques that enable a creative approach to the material. We learn a great deal about harvesting, drying and preparing the materials
