Conventional wood-based recycled products contain a mixture of toxic chemicals, plastic coatings, lacquers, and adhesives. They contaminate indoor air through off-gassing and, at the end of their lifecycle, must be incinerated as hazardous waste. Certain fungi—such as the native tree fungus Ganoderma lucidum—are capable of metabolizing wood. The question is how we can harness mycelium cultures as a sustainable, non-toxic alternative to adhesives for wood chips, thereby enabling a truly natural cycle within the wood industry.
