Wool warms, insulates, fertilizes, binds pollutants, and absorbs sound. Nevertheless, around 290 tons of sheep's wool are disposed of in Brandenburg every year. At the same time, thousands of people in Berlin live without a permanent residence. Can this regional wool provide warmth and protection to homeless people? Our design process was iterative and practice-oriented. We explored felting techniques with regional wool, both by hand and using robots. In felting workshops that we organized at the railway station mission, we spoke with homeless people to better understand the emotional and practical value of wool. Samples and field research served as the basis for creating larger prototypes for user testing. The result is a portable wool mat with integrated cords on both sides. These ensure year-round, multifunctional use for insulation, greater comfort, and user support. We also gathered and documented valuable knowledge about wool. With WARM, we focus on positive effects for people and the environment and work collaboratively to achieve this.
