Can moss be grown into a material that will aid in the reduction of noise pollution in cities?

‘Living with Moss’ is an ongoing research project which investigates local mosses of Berlin and aims to develop a multi-functional moss yarn; its primary function being to reduce noise pollution in the city. The practical product development is combined with an online journal which informs and encourages a newly established, beneficial coexistence with moss. It documents my successes and challenges of cultivating moss on yarn and fabric, which has led to an enhanced relationship with the natural world, and opens up this journey of growth to the community.

The hands-on work with moss and its patterns of growth also inspired my designs for architectural surroundings which integrate nature and improve our wellbeing. These surfaces will add to our daily lives and improve our cities through both their natural and aesthetic qualities and the reduction of noise, as well as other types of pollution.
