The Lausitz region is rich in resources that are barely noticed or appreciated. The core of the concept “The Table” is to make existing local resources visible and valued through a form of “resource mapping”. In collaboration with local food producers, a dining experience is staged that fosters encounters and encourages tasting and reflection.
The meal is eaten with the fingers. There are, for example, quark, linseed oil, and carp from Upper Lusatia. The presentation of the food on the table implies a specific interaction each time: the final step of preparation — such as seasoning and tasting — is carried out by the guests themselves. They must break the bread on their own. Some preparation steps, such as grating horseradish, can only be done together by two guests. Enamel bowls and linen towels are provided for washing hands.
Eating at “The Table” means consciously and playfully engaging with foods from one’s own region and learning to appreciate them. From this, a positive attitude toward one’s homeland can develop.
We support this through ritualized gestures at “The Table”. Rituals help us feel included. They provide structure, create meaning and community, and allow us to see the familiar in a new light. With “The Table”, we create rituals to draw attention to the economic, cultural, and social resources of the surroundings.
“The Table” is a metaphor for the community and the social interaction we wish for the Lausitz region.
